About this tool

Continue was an open-source AI coding assistant that ran inside VS Code and JetBrains IDEs and, later, in the terminal through its cn command-line tool. Developers connected the models they preferred and used it to ask questions about code, rewrite a selection without leaving the file, receive inline completions as they typed, or hand a development task to an agent mode.

The company behind the project has been acquired by Cursor. Continue’s website now carries a thank-you message to its community, and the GitHub repository is flagged as read-only and no longer actively maintained. Before stopping, the team published version 2.0.0 as a last update to the VS Code extension, the CLI and the JetBrains plugin, removing anonymous telemetry and the sign-in layer. The source remains published under the Apache 2.0 licence, so it can still be studied, forked or maintained by others.

For new work, treat Continue as a reference implementation rather than a supported tool. The original team will not ship further fixes, model integrations or security patches. Its documentation still explains the main modes, which helps if you inherit a configuration that depends on it.

What you can do

Agent mode

Let the assistant carry out a development task across files while you supervise.

Chat

Ask general questions or request explanations of selected code in a side panel.

Edit

Rewrite a highlighted block in place without switching files.

Autocomplete

Inline suggestions while typing, using the model you configure.

CLI

The cn command brings the assistant to the terminal; the team recommended it over the JetBrains plugin.

Who is it for?

  • A developer keeps using the final release with a self-chosen model while planning a migration.
  • An engineering team forks the Apache-licensed code to maintain an internal assistant.
  • Someone researching coding assistants studies how an open-source agent was structured.

Before you choose

Without maintenance, compatibility with new editor versions and model APIs will degrade, and no security updates are planned.

If you need an actively maintained tool, compare current options such as Cursor, Cline or Zed before adopting Continue.

Frequently asked questions

Who acquired Continue?

Continue’s website states that the company was acquired by Cursor and has joined its team.

Can I still use the code?

Yes. The code is published under the Apache 2.0 licence, which allows use, modification and redistribution under its terms.
