Hemingway Editor
Hemingway Editor highlights long sentences, complex words, adverbs and passive voice to make writing clear and concise, with AI fixes in its Plus plan.
About this tool
Hemingway Editor is a well-known readability tool. Paste or write text and it colour-codes problems: yellow for long sentences worth shortening or splitting, red for sentences so dense readers may get lost, purple for words with simpler alternatives, and blue for adverbs, passive voice and other weakening phrases. The aim is concise, direct prose.
The web app shows these highlights as you paste or write. Hemingway Editor Plus adds AI that can fix the highlighted issues for you, adjust tone and run an advanced grammar checker that marks problems in green. Writers often use it alongside a full grammar tool, since its strength is clarity and readability rather than comprehensive correction.

- A civil servant simplifies a public notice for a general audience.

Before you choose
Readability rules are guidelines; some technical or literary writing legitimately needs longer sentences.
Grammar checking is part of the paid Plus tier rather than the free app.
