Vapi vs Retell AI vs Bland AI: building AI phone agents
Three voice agent platforms compared on how much control they give developers, how per-minute pricing really works and which calls each is built for.
Voice agents that answer and place phone calls have moved from demos to production, and Vapi, Retell AI and Bland AI are three of the platforms most often shortlisted. All three combine speech recognition, a language model and a synthetic voice, connect to telephony and call your systems during a conversation. They differ in how much of that stack you assemble yourself, how they bill and which kinds of calls they emphasise.
The short answer
- Choose Vapi if you are a developer who wants to pick each provider in the stack and control the agent through an API.
- Choose Retell AI if you want your own team to build and update call-centre agents quickly, with simple pay-as-you-go pricing.
- Choose Bland AI if your calls are complex or regulated and you need to see why the agent made each decision.
Side by side
| Vapi | Retell AI | Bland AI | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | Developer platform; choose transcriber, model and voice providers | Platform your team operates; proprietary orchestration | Agents for high-stakes, regulated calls |
| Channels | Inbound and outbound phone, web | Phone calls | Phone, SMS and web |
| Free start | $5 in credits | $10 in credits | Start plan with credits and an inbound number, no card |
| Pricing model | Per minute: hosting fee listed at $0.05/min plus provider costs | About $0.07–$0.31 per minute depending on components | Per minute including model and speech; higher plans add a platform fee |
| Distinctive strength | Provider choice and API control | Self-serve building, testing and deployment | Decision transparency and safe testing |
What a minute really costs
Comparing headline per-minute rates is misleading. Vapi’s listed hosting fee covers its orchestration, while the transcriber, language model and voice providers you select are billed on top. Retell quotes a range that depends on the components you choose. Bland states that its per-minute rate includes the model and speech, with no separate pass-through charges, and contrasts this with platforms that bill those layers separately. Estimate the full cost of a typical call length on each before deciding.
Control versus convenience
Vapi suits engineering teams that want to swap providers to balance latency, quality and cost, and to wire agents into internal APIs for tasks such as appointment booking. Retell aims to let a customer’s own team change, test and deploy agents without depending on the vendor, and cites benchmarks for latency of around 600 milliseconds. Bland focuses on situations where a mistake could have legal or safety consequences, giving visibility into each decision and a way to test changes away from live calls.
Compliance comes first
Automated calling is regulated in many countries. Depending on where you operate, you may need consent before calling, must disclose that the caller is an AI and must handle recordings carefully. None of these platforms removes that responsibility. Settle the legal requirements for your use case before comparing features.
How to decide
- Write a script for one real call type, including the systems the agent must check or update.
- Build it on each platform’s free credits and run the same test calls.
- Measure response delays, interruptions handled and how often a human had to step in.
- Calculate the all-in cost per call, including model and voice components.
- Confirm consent, disclosure and recording rules for the regions you will call.
