FIELD NOTES / Original editorial

Less hype. More useful AI.

The next tool you need is the one that solves an actual problem.

An endless list of AI products is not the same thing as a useful guide. The difficult part is connecting a real task to a tool that fits your workflow, your budget, and the way you work.

Start with a task, not a product. Write down what you want to finish: a first draft, a working prototype, an edited interview, a presentation. The more specific the task, the easier it becomes to judge a tool on the result.

Test with the same input. Give two or three tools an identical, representative task. Keep track of the time you spend correcting their output. A polished demo can hide a lot of manual work; a useful test makes that work visible.

Read the terms before uploading sensitive material. Check what the vendor says about retention, model training, commercial usage, and deletion. These policies differ between products and plans.

Keep your stack small. A new product earns its place when it replaces a frustrating step or makes an important task possible. The goal is not to collect more subscriptions. It is to get better work done.
