Buffer vs Hootsuite vs Ocoya: social media tools with AI

Three social media management tools compared on scheduling, AI content, team features and how pricing scales for creators and brands.

Scheduling posts across networks is now table stakes, and all three of these tools add AI to write or adapt content. They suit different teams. Buffer stays simple and affordable for creators and small businesses, Hootsuite is built for company social teams with listening and approvals, and Ocoya puts AI generation at the centre, even letting AI assistants operate it.

The short answer

  • Choose Buffer if you are a creator or small team that wants straightforward scheduling and an AI assistant at a low cost.
  • Choose Hootsuite if a company social team needs listening, a shared inbox, automation and approval workflows.
  • Choose Ocoya if you want AI to draft, design and schedule content for you, or to run social media from Claude or ChatGPT.

Pricing scales differently

Buffer prices per connected channel, so a solo creator with three accounts pays little, while a brand with many accounts pays more. Hootsuite prices per user, which can become expensive for large teams but includes listening and governance features. Ocoya uses subscription plans with AI allowances. Model your number of channels and users before comparing list prices.

How much AI do you want?

Buffer’s AI Assistant helps you brainstorm and adapt posts, keeping you in charge of each message. Hootsuite generates posts and images and answers questions about your social data in plain language. Ocoya goes furthest, producing weeks of content on-brand from a brief and exposing its tools to AI assistants through MCP. Heavily automated posting still needs human review to avoid repetitive or inaccurate content.

How to decide

  1. Count the channels you publish to and the people who need access.
  2. Decide whether you need listening, approvals and inbox automation or only scheduling.
  3. Test the AI features on a week of real posts and measure how much you edit.
  4. Check that every network you use, including newer ones such as Bluesky or Threads, is supported.
  5. Compare annual costs at your current size and at double that size.
