Firebase Studio alternatives after the shutdown notice
Firebase Studio closed to new users in June 2026 and shuts down on 22 March 2027. Where to build AI-assisted apps instead.
Google has announced that Firebase Studio, its browser-based agentic development environment, is being retired. New workspace creation and sign-ups were disabled on 22 June 2026, and the service shuts down on 22 March 2027. Apps already deployed to Firebase keep running, and core Firebase products such as Firestore and Authentication are unaffected. Existing users need a new place to build.
Google’s own recommendation
Google points Firebase Studio users to Google AI Studio and Google Antigravity, and publishes migration guidance. Google AI Studio is the quickest route if your project centres on Gemini: it combines a prompt playground with API keys, managed agents and access to Google’s image, video and speech models.
At a glance
| Tool | Approach | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Studio | Browser workspace for Gemini apps and the Gemini API | Projects built around Gemini models |
| Lovable | Natural-language app building with a React front end and Supabase backend | Founders and teams prototyping web apps quickly |
| Kiro | Spec-driven agentic IDE and CLI | Teams wanting structure: requirements, design, tasks |
| Trae | AI coding editor (TraeCode) with cloud tasks | Developers wanting an AI-first desktop editor |
| Cursor | AI-enhanced development environment with agents | Developers continuing in a full local IDE |
Browser-based app building
If you liked Firebase Studio’s prototyping agent, Lovable offers a similar starting point: describe the app in plain language and it generates a React front end connected to Supabase for data and authentication, with a visual editor for changes. Check that Supabase meets your compliance needs.
Moving to a local or agentic IDE
Developers may prefer to move the code into a desktop environment. Kiro adds structure by turning prompts into specs and tasks, and checks correctness with property-based tests. Trae and Cursor provide AI-first editors with agents. All three expect you to manage your own repository and deployment, which Firebase handled for you.
Migration checklist
- Export or push every workspace to a Git repository now.
- List the Firebase services each app uses; they continue to work after the shutdown.
- Choose a new environment based on whether you need browser-only work or a full IDE.
- Recreate environment configuration, such as Nix settings, in the new tool.
- Finish the move well before 22 March 2027.
