About this tool

Firebase Studio is a cloud development environment from Google that combined the former Project IDX with AI agents and Gemini assistance to build full-stack apps in the browser. Google has announced its retirement: since 22 June 2026, new workspaces and sign-ups are disabled, and the service will shut down on 22 March 2027. Existing users can keep working and are asked to migrate to Google AI Studio or Google Antigravity.

Apps already deployed to Firebase keep running after the sunset, and core Firebase products such as Firestore, Authentication and App Hosting are not affected. While active, Firebase Studio let developers import repositories from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, prototype apps from natural language, mockups or screenshots with its App Prototyping agent, and customise environments with Nix.

What you can do

Browser-based workspaces

Full development environments in the cloud, with imports from major Git hosts.

App Prototyping agent

Generate a starting app from natural language, drawings, mockups or screenshots.

Gemini assistance

AI help for coding, debugging, testing, refactoring and documentation within the workspace.

Migration paths

Google provides guidance for moving workspaces to AI Studio or Antigravity before shutdown.

Who is it for?

  • An existing user exports a prototype workspace before the March 2027 shutdown.
  • A team confirms that its Firebase-hosted app keeps running after the sunset.
  • A developer evaluates AI Studio or Antigravity as a replacement.

Before you choose

New users cannot sign up, so Firebase Studio is only relevant for migrating existing workspaces.

Plan migration well before 22 March 2027 to avoid losing access to workspace code.
