ChatGPT for Google (AI Chat for Search)
ChatGPT for Google, later renamed AI Chat for Search, was a browser extension that showed AI chat answers beside search engine results. Its developer discontinued the service on 20 August 2026.
About this tool
ChatGPT for Google was a browser extension that placed an AI chat answer next to the ordinary results of a search engine, so that a written summary and the usual list of links could be read side by side. The product was later renamed AI Chat for Search, and its original address now leads to the site under that name.
That site now carries a closure notice. It states that the service ended officially on 20 August 2026 and is no longer available, that personal data was permanently deleted under the developer’s retention policy, and that the period for requesting an export has closed. Former users therefore cannot recover earlier conversations or settings.
Much of what the extension offered is now built into search engines and assistants themselves. Answer engines such as Perplexity, and assistants such as ChatGPT or Kagi’s Assistant, combine generated answers with cited sources. The alternatives listed on this page are active tools that cover the same need.

Who is it for?
- A former user confirms that the extension no longer works and why.
- Someone who liked AI answers next to search results compares current alternatives.
- An IT team auditing browser extensions removes an inactive one.
Before you choose
Uninstall the extension if it is still in your browser: an unmaintained extension with access to the pages you visit is a needless security risk.
No data can be exported any more, so do not rely on old conversations being recoverable.
