Perplexity vs Kagi: AI answers or ad-free search?

Two alternatives to traditional search compared on how they answer, AI model access, privacy commitments and pricing.

Perplexity and Kagi both appeal to people frustrated with ad-heavy search, but they take different routes. Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches the web and writes a cited response. Kagi is a paid search engine first, with no ads and personalised results, plus Kagi Assistant for using many AI models grounded in its search.

The short answer

  • Choose Perplexity if you want direct, cited answers and long research reports with minimal effort.
  • Choose Kagi if you want a private, ad-free search engine you can tune, plus an assistant with access to many AI models.

Answers versus results

Perplexity is fastest when you want a summary: ask a question and read a short answer with sources, then follow up. Its Research mode runs many searches to produce a structured report. Kagi keeps the familiar list of results, which is better when you want to choose sources yourself, and offers customisation controls and filters for your results. Its Assistant covers the answer-engine use case when you want it, letting you switch models mid-conversation.

Kagi’s model is simple: users pay, so it has no advertising incentive. It states that Assistant prompts are not used to train models and offers expiring threads. Perplexity’s privacy terms differ between individual and Enterprise accounts, so check which apply before uploading work files. In both cases, read the citations for anything important; a source link does not guarantee the summary is accurate.

How to decide

  1. List ten searches you made this week, from quick facts to research.
  2. Run them in both tools and note which gave you a usable result faster.
  3. Check the cited sources on two answers for accuracy.
  4. Decide whether ad-free, tunable results matter more than written answers.
  5. Compare the paid plans against how often you search each day.
