Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf: Cognition’s AI code editor, now organised around a command centre for running local and cloud coding agents, including agents from other vendors.

About this tool

Windsurf, the AI code editor developed under Cognition, has been renamed Devin Desktop. Cognition presents the change as the next generation of the same product rather than a replacement. Existing users receive it as an over-the-air update, and the company says subscriptions, prices, extensions and settings carry over unchanged. Older Windsurf rules files are still read, although new rules are expected in a .devin directory.

The main shift is one of emphasis. Instead of opening on a single assistant beside your code, Devin Desktop puts an agent command centre first: a Kanban-style board where you start, follow and review sessions run by local and cloud agents. Spaces group sessions, pull requests, files and context so that several agents can work on one piece of work with shared information. The complete editor is still there, with autocomplete, debugging, language servers and compatibility with VS Code extensions and keybindings.

Cascade, the local agent Windsurf users knew, is being succeeded by Devin Local, which Cognition says it rewrote in Rust and which uses fewer tokens; the older agent stayed available for a transition period. Through the Agent Client Protocol, the editor can also host agents from other vendors, such as Codex, Claude Agent and OpenCode, next to Devin. The JetBrains plugin keeps the Windsurf name and remains available for download.

What you can do

Agent command centre

A board view to launch, monitor and review local and cloud agent sessions in one place.

Spaces

Groups of sessions, pull requests, files and Git worktrees that agents share as common context.

Devin Local

The successor to Cascade as the built-in local agent, rewritten in Rust according to Cognition.

Third-party agents

Agent Client Protocol support for Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode and in-house agents.

Full editor

Autocomplete, debugging, language servers and VS Code extension compatibility remain built in.

Who is it for?

  • A developer delegates several refactoring tasks to agents and reviews each diff from the board before pushing.
  • A team runs its own background agent alongside Devin and keeps both working from the same Space.
  • A former Windsurf user keeps an existing setup and rules while moving to the new agent workflow.

Before you choose

The rename changes paths, binaries and hostnames used by the application, so administrators should review allowlists and device policies before rollout.

Plans are published on devin.ai, but usage limits and model access differ by tier; check the current pricing page before buying seats for a team.

Frequently asked questions

Is Windsurf discontinued?

No. Windsurf was renamed Devin Desktop and existing installations update to it; Cognition says plans and settings carry over.

What happened to Cascade?

Devin Local replaces Cascade as the main local agent, and the legacy Cascade agent was kept for a limited migration period.

Can I use agents other than Devin?

Yes. Devin Desktop supports the Agent Client Protocol, so compatible agents such as Codex, Claude Agent or OpenCode can run inside it.
