Semrush vs Ahrefs vs SE Ranking: SEO platforms compared
Three major SEO suites compared on their data, AI search visibility tracking, agency features and how plans are sized.
Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking cover the same core jobs: keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits and rank tracking. All three have also added tools that measure how brands appear in AI assistants and AI Overviews, which is quickly becoming part of search marketing. The differences lie in the depth of their data, the extras around SEO and how their plans scale.
The short answer
- Choose Semrush for the broadest marketing suite: SEO plus advertising, local listings, market research and AI visibility.
- Choose Ahrefs if backlink data from its own web index is central to your work, with Brand Radar for AI chatbot visibility.
- Choose SE Ranking for agency-friendly rank tracking, white-label reporting and plans sized by keywords and prompts.

Data you can trust, with limits
Traffic and keyword volumes in all three are modelled estimates, not your real analytics. They are useful for comparing competitors and spotting trends, but check them against Search Console before making decisions. Ahrefs is particularly strong on backlinks because it runs its own crawler, which is why many link-building teams treat it as a reference. Semrush adds advertising and market research data, while SE Ranking provides traffic estimates from its own datasets at sizes that suit smaller teams and agencies.
Tracking visibility in AI answers
Each vendor now sells a way to see whether AI assistants mention or cite your brand. Semrush reports mentions and citations across assistants and Google’s AI Overviews. Ahrefs’ Brand Radar draws on a large database of prompts, and its prompt tracking is billed by checks with overage charged at month end. SE Ranking’s SE Visible tracks share of voice and sentiment across named AI engines. Treat this data as directional: answers vary by prompt, location and time.
Agencies and multi-site work
SE Ranking leans hardest into agency needs with white-label dashboards, client-facing tools and scheduled reports with AI summaries. Semrush and Ahrefs handle multiple projects too, but their plans are sized differently, so agencies should count sites, keywords and prompts before choosing.
How to decide
- List the reports you produce every month and the data each one needs.
- Count projects, tracked keywords and AI prompts for a full year.
- Run the same competitor and keyword analysis in each trial and compare against your Search Console data.
- Check how AI visibility tracking is billed, including any overage.
- If you are an agency, test white-label reporting with a real client report.
